There’s a new reason to spend time in South Downtown.

City leaders officially opened Founders Green on Wednesday morning — a new public gathering space designed for movie nights, yoga classes, community events, lunches, celebrations, sports watch parties, and everyday hangouts in the heart of Downtown Atlanta.

For residents, it’s another sign that South Downtown is continuing to evolve into a more active, connected, and walkable neighborhood.

Located at 110 Broad Street SW, the new green space sits among South Downtown’s historic buildings — many of which are being restored and brought back to life after sitting underused for years.

Mayor Andre Dickens said the project is about more than just a park space. It’s about creating a place where people want to gather and spend time together.

“Public spaces are essential to thriving neighborhoods,” Mayor Dickens said during the ribbon cutting. “These spaces drive foot traffic to local businesses. They connect us to each other and to something bigger than us. They give us a sense of ownership and pride.”

That could mean more community events, more activity for nearby businesses, and more reasons for residents and visitors to spend time Downtown outside of major events or office hours.

The space is expected to become a hub for neighborhood programming and community activity as South Downtown continues attracting new residents, restaurants, retailers, and businesses.

Mayor Dickens called South Downtown “Atlanta’s original neighborhood” and said the area’s historic buildings and character make it one of the city’s most unique places.

“The historic buildings still stand, and the whole area has what the developers call ‘great bones,’” the Mayor said. “Today is further confirmation of the momentum that’s running through Downtown Atlanta right now.”

The name “Founders Green” honors historic Atlanta figures connected to the area’s early growth, including businessman and philanthropist Alonzo Herndon.

For residents walking through Downtown in the coming months, Founders Green is expected to become more than just another development project.

It’s meant to be a place where Atlanta gathers.
