Cascade Road is back and better than ever. Following round-the-clock resurfacing and years of community-driven planning, the iconic Southwest Atlanta corridor has officially reopened to two-way traffic. This milestone restores direct access to beloved local businesses and lays the foundation for a safer, more vibrant street experience for all.
“This project provides a safer roadway, reduces the speed to 25 mph, and brightens up the corridor- it’s beautiful and long overdue,” said Commissioner Solomon Caviness, Atlanta Department of Transportation.

What’s New on Cascade Road?

From new sidewalks to future streetlights, the Cascade Road enhancements are part of a broader infrastructure vision to transform how residents move, connect, and experience public space in Southwest Atlanta.
Key improvements include:
  • Resurfaced roadway from Willis Mill Road SW to Kingsdale Drive SW
  • New sidewalks along the northern edge for safer pedestrian access
  • Multi-modal paths for bikers and joggers
  • A future upgrade to include benches, lighting, and trash receptacles
“We’re not just repaving a road we’re re-imagining what community infrastructure can look like,” said Council member Marci Collier Overstreet, District 11. The only thing I’m telling folks now is to slow down. This is a space for everyone.”
With the corridor now fully open, city officials are reminding drivers that the speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph to protect pedestrians and cyclists using the new path. The investment in safety measures marks a bold step forward in creating complete streets that serve all modes of transportation, not just cars.
Built with the Community, For the Community
The project’s success was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT), local contractors, and the patience and feedback of area residents. Despite rainy conditions, ATLDOT crews worked around the clock from August 11 to August 16—completing milling, resurfacing, and temporary striping ahead of schedule.
“Cascade Road is a key artery connecting our most cherished neighborhoods, residents, and small businesses,” said Commissioner Caviness. “We are grateful for the community’s resilience and proud to restore access along this vital southern gateway.”
With more enhancements still to come, Cascade Road is shaping up to be a signature example of how thoughtful design, community voice, and efficient city action can transform infrastructure into opportunity.
