For many Atlanta residents, affordable housing conversations can feel distant — tied to policy meetings, construction announcements, or development plans happening somewhere else in the city.
But during today’s annual State of Atlanta Housing event, city leaders framed the issue much more simply: stable housing affects daily life.
From keeping families connected to jobs and schools to helping residents avoid living paycheck to paycheck, speakers emphasized that housing is tied directly to opportunity, neighborhood stability, and Atlanta’s future.
Mayor Andre Dickens told attendees that housing should be viewed as “economic infrastructure” just as important as roads, transit, and workforce development.
“Stable housing can mean the difference between surviving and thriving,” the Mayor said during remarks at the event.
What Residents May Notice Across Atlanta
The event highlighted several major redevelopment and housing projects currently underway or in planning phases across the city, including:
- Bowen Homes
- Civic Center redevelopment plans
- Englewood redevelopment efforts
- Herndon Square area projects
- Trinity Central Flats near City Hall
City leaders said many of these projects are being designed as mixed-income communities connected to transit, jobs, education, and green space.
The broader goal, officials said, is helping Atlanta grow without pushing longtime residents out of the city.
Why This Matters Beyond Housing
Atlanta continues to face rising housing costs as the city grows. During the event, leaders connected affordable housing to several issues residents often talk about every day:
- Workforce stability
- Transit access
- Neighborhood investment
- Small business growth
- Economic mobility
- Keeping young people in Atlanta after college
The Mayor also tied the work to the Administration’s larger goal of building “safe, healthy, connected neighborhoods” through the Moving Atlanta Forward agenda.
The City’s long-term affordable housing strategy includes a goal of creating or preserving 20,000 affordable housing units citywide.
What’s Next
Atlanta Housing leaders used the annual event to reflect on current projects while also discussing future development plans and partnerships. The program included discussions on resident success stories, real estate development, and the future of affordable housing in Atlanta.
