District 4 Council member Jason Dozier, joined by Mayor Andre Dickens, recently honored the cultural and economic impact of The Mall West End with a special commemorative celebration. The event recognized the mall’s pivotal role as a community anchor and celebrated the legacy businesses that have shaped the West End experience for generations.

“As we prepare to turn the page to a new chapter, we pause to honor the role that The Mall West End has played in shaping our community story. We honor the memories made here, the businesses that grew here, and the culture that was celebrated here,” said Council member Dozier.

Since its opening in 1973, The Mall West End served as a vital hub for African American commerce, conveniently located just across from a MARTA station. Over its 52-year history, it fostered numerous small businesses, two of which were formally honored during the celebration.

  • Dendera Cosmetics was recognized for its 45 years of service.
  • The Burning Sands, founded by Alicia Porter, was commended for its 37 years of business and its role in community advocacy.

The Mall officially closed its doors on January 31, 2025, to make way for One West End Atlanta—a 12-acre mixed-use, mixed-income redevelopment led by the City of Atlanta, Atlanta Urban Development, and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.

Planned features of One West End Atlanta include:

  • 125,000 square feet of retail, including a grocery store, fitness center, local boutiques, and food and beverage options
  • 10,000 square feet of affordable commercial space for qualified small businesses
  • 900 mixed-income rental units, with:
  • 70% reserved for workforce housing
  • 20% affordable at 50% AMI
  • 10% affordable at 80% AMI
  • A 150-key hotel

BRP Companies will lead residential development, while The Prusik Group will manage commercial real estate.

Construction on the first phase is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed by 2028. During this time, legacy tenants—including Dendera Cosmetics, The Burning Sands, True Hair, and American Deli—will temporarily relocate to 850 Oak St. and return once new retail spaces are ready.

The estimated cost for One West End Atlanta is $450 million, supported by:

  • $5 million acquisition loan from Atlanta Urban Development
  • $5 million from Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.
  • $19 million in acquisition financing from Merchants Capital
