Midnight Basketball Returns for Its Eighth Season, Bringing Community and Opportunity to Atlanta’s Youth

More than a game, this city-backed initiative combines sports, mentorship, and life skills to keep youth safe and engaged while building stronger communities.

First launched while Mayor Andre Dickens was a city councilmember, the program has grown into a cornerstone initiative for youth engagement, violence prevention, and community connection. It now plays a critical role in Atlanta’s broader public safety and youth development strategy.

“This program has become a gathering place for the whole community—mothers, sons, kids, grandparents—all enjoying the game together,” said Mayor Dickens at a recent championship event. “Midnight Basketball isn’t just about the sport—it’s about the connection it builds across generations.”

A Safe Space to Thrive

Since its early days, Midnight Basketball has shown real impact, particularly in neighborhoods where youth are most vulnerable to crime and disconnection.

By offering organized evening basketball games, the program provides a positive, structured space during high-risk hours—giving young people an alternative to the streets and a chance to be part of something greater.

Local data shows that crime rates have decreased in areas served by the program, underscoring its role in helping reduce violence and build trust between residents, police, and city leaders.

Beyond the Court: Support for the Whole Person

Midnight Basketball isn’t just about hoops. Participants also have access to:

  • Mentorship from community leaders and professionals
  • Job training and employment resources
  • Educational opportunities and support services
  • Health and wellness resources
  • This wraparound approach ensures that youth are not only active—but equipped with the tools to succeed in life.

A Long-Term Vision for a Safer Atlanta

Mayor Dickens, a longtime advocate of the program, has continued to champion its growth since taking office. Under his leadership, the city has committed to expanding opportunities like Midnight Basketball to ensure young Atlantans feel supported, included, and safe.

“This program shows what’s possible when community, recreation, and opportunity come together,” said Dickens. “It’s how we build a stronger, more connected Atlanta.”

Midnight Basketball tips off March 25 at recreation centers across the city.
