Jackson Street Bridge Gets Safer for People, Not Just Cars

A Moving Atlanta Forward investment is redesigning one of Atlanta’s most iconic overlooks to better protect pedestrians and cyclists while calming traffic.

For years, the Jackson Street Bridge has been one of Atlanta’s most recognizable spots—a place where people stop to take photos, meet friends, and enjoy the skyline. Now, the City of Atlanta is making changes to ensure those moments happen more safely and comfortably for everyone.

As part of the Moving Atlanta Forward Infrastructure Bond, improvements are underway to transform the bridge into a safer, more complete corridor that works better for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

A safer design for a well-loved space

The updated design intentionally moves people farther away from traffic and creates more room to walk, bike, and gather. Travel lanes have been reconfigured to slow vehicles, while protected space gives cyclists and pedestrians a clearer, safer path across the bridge.

Instead of squeezing people alongside fast-moving cars, the project creates breathing room—allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the space without feeling rushed or unsafe.

“This is a signature location for our city— for tourists, visitors, and the community,” said Solomon Caviness IV. “People come here to take pictures, spend time together, and enjoy the city. This project makes sure they can do that safely.”

Who’s leading the work

The project is led by the Atlanta Department of Transportation, under Commissioner Caviness. His team is responsible for designing and delivering street improvements across the city with a focus on safety, access, and quality of life for people moving through Atlanta every day.

Built for the future, focused on safety and equity

The Jackson Street Bridge improvements reflect Mayor Andre Dickens’ vision for a city built for the future—one that prioritizes safety, equity, and everyday livability.

By slowing traffic and protecting people walking and biking, the project supports safer travel for all ages and abilities while creating a more welcoming public space for residents and visitors alike.

Shaped by partnership and community input

The project was developed in collaboration with partners including PATH Foundation, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District. Community improvement districts also shared insight into how people use the bridge and what they want from the space.

“Quality of life has to be central to infrastructure improvements,” Caviness said. “We have to engage and involve the community as we deliver these projects.”

Progress you can see

The Jackson Street Bridge is one example of how the Moving Atlanta Forward Infrastructure Bond is turning investment into visible, on-the-ground improvements. By rethinking how space is shared, Atlanta is creating streets and public spaces that feel safer, function better, and invite people to stay awhile.

Whether you live nearby or are visiting for the first time, the goal is simple: a safer place to move through the city and enjoy one of Atlanta’s most iconic views.
