Getting to Your Gate Just Got Easier: ATL Opens Modernized South Parking Deck

On Friday, Mayor Andre Dickens joined airport leaders to officially reopen the newly modernized South Parking Deck at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, marking another step in preparing the world’s busiest airport for future growth and the arrival of millions of visitors expected during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The upgraded deck replaces infrastructure that was more than 40 years old and introduces several new features designed to make parking faster, easier, and less stressful for travelers.

Among the biggest improvements is a smart parking guidance system that uses digital displays to show drivers where parking spaces are available in real time. The technology is expected to reduce time spent circling decks looking for a spot and help travelers get from their cars to the terminal more efficiently.

Silence the Shame's mission is to empower and educate communities on mental health and wellness.

“Any of us who’s ever had to navigate parking out here likely has experienced a challenge or two,” Mayor Dickens said. “This new deck has automated parking guidance and can show us, in real time, where there’s space available. This will make our parking easier and more efficient.”

The project also includes major upgrades to cellular connectivity through a new Distributed Antenna System, allowing travelers to more easily check flight information, arrange rides, make calls, and stay connected while moving through the facility.

In addition, the deck features modernized safety systems, including upgraded emergency detection and notification technology designed to better protect passengers and employees.

Airport General Manager Ricky Smith noted that the project reflects ATL’s ongoing commitment to improving the passenger experience while preparing for continued growth.

The South Parking Deck reopening is only the first phase of a larger parking modernization effort. Airport officials announced that Phase 2 will begin later this year and add approximately 5,000 additional parking spaces.

The improvements come at a critical time as Atlanta prepares to welcome visitors from around the globe for FIFA World Cup 2026.

“When you’re the world’s busiest airport, you don’t get to slow down,” Mayor Dickens said. “You keep moving forward.”

For travelers, that means an easier parking experience, stronger connectivity, and one more improvement designed to make arriving at and departing from ATL more convenient than ever.
