The FIFA World Cup™ is now just days away, and Atlanta’s preparations continue moving forward with momentum. On May 28, approximately 125 City of Atlanta employees and partner volunteers gathered for a large-scale beautification activation coordinated by the Keep Atlanta Beautiful Commission (KABC) and key corporate partners Cox Enterprises, Georgia Pacific, and Southern Company. The cleanup took place in Council District 10, led by Council Member Andrea Boone, who attended and engaged directly with volunteers throughout the effort.

The volunteer teams worked along several segments of the historic Martin Luther King Jr. Drive corridor, an area rich in Atlanta’s history and cultural significance that will experience increased visibility during FIFA-related activities and future international events. These locations serve as major gateways for residents and the estimated 350,000 to 500,000 visitors anticipated to soon arrive in the city.

Volunteers engaged in hands-on restoration projects that included pollinator planting, litter abatement, landscaping improvements, weed removal, and general corridor cleanup. The work refreshed prominent stretches of roadway and public spaces, helping ensure Atlanta presents a clean, welcoming environment during the global event.

The projects also support broader initiatives, including the City of Atlanta’s Operation Clean Sweep and continued efforts to activate volunteers and corporate partners in neighborhood beautification and environmental stewardship activities across Atlanta.

The involvement of corporate partners played a crucial role. Teams from Cox Enterprises, Georgia Pacific, and Southern Company contributed time, energy, and resources that significantly expanded the project’s impact. Their collaboration with KABC and the City of Atlanta reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, community enhancement, and civic pride.

Public and Private Sectors Working Together

Led operationally by KABC, the initiative aligns with the City of Atlanta’s broader readiness efforts for the FIFA World Cup 2026™. The activation not only improved the appearance of several high-traffic corridors but also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in preparing the city for one of the most highly anticipated global sporting events.

As volunteers completed their work, the results were visible throughout the corridors: cleaner sidewalks, revitalized planting beds, and enhanced public areas that will serve both residents and international visitors in the weeks ahead.

Building Community Through Stewardship

With kickoff approaching, efforts like this demonstrate how Atlantans are uniting to elevate the city’s public spaces and welcome the world. KABC, the City of Atlanta, and their corporate partners will continue supporting beautification and sustainability projects that strengthen communities long after the tournament concludes.
