This October, the Mayor’s Office of Violence Reduction (MOVR) proudly launched Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a series of powerful community events that bring together residents, partners, and survivors to raise awareness, provide resources, and promote healing.

Paint Atlanta Purple

The month began with Paint Atlanta Purple, a citywide campaign encouraging residents, businesses, and organizations to display purple lights, ribbons, and signs in solidarity with survivors of domestic violence. The color purple—long recognized as the symbol of domestic violence awareness—transformed neighborhoods and workplaces into visible reminders of Atlanta’s shared stand against abuse.

Community Lunch & Learn

MOVR also hosted an engaging Lunch & Learn that brought together advocates, community leaders, and residents for meaningful conversations on prevention, intervention, and support. The session created space for learning, connection, and collaboration while spotlighting local and national resources available to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.

Atlanta Victim Assistance 5K

The awareness efforts continued with the Atlanta Victim Assistance 5K, a family-friendly run and walk that drew participants from across the metro area. The event served as both a fundraiser and an opportunity to celebrate resilience, honor survivors, and remember those lost. The collective energy of the 5K reinforced the city’s commitment to ending violence through unity and action.

Coming Up: STOP Domestic Violence Abuse 5K

Mark your calendars for the STOP Domestic Violence Abuse 5K, hosted in partnership with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office and community partners. This upcoming event continues Atlanta’s monthlong effort to unite residents in the movement to end domestic violence and uplift those affected.

Why It Matters

Domestic violence affects individuals and families across every community. Through education, advocacy, and collective action, Atlanta is working to break cycles of abuse and create safer environments for all. These events are more than symbolic gestures—they represent a citywide commitment to connect people with resources, elevate survivor voices, and build a community where healing and prevention lead the way.

The Mayor’s Office of Violence Reduction invites all Atlantans to take part in Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

  • Wear purple to show your support.
  • Attend upcoming events throughout October.
  • Share resources with someone who may need help.

Together, we can amplify awareness, support survivors, and move closer to a future free from domestic violence.
