In a city built on progress and powered by people, Atlanta continues to elevate leaders who reflect the vibrant diversity of our communities. Mayor Andre Dickens has named Dewayne R. Queen as the new Director of the Division of LGBTQ Affairs in the Mayor’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Announced on the 10th anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges—the U.S. Supreme Court decision that secured marriage equality nationwide—this milestone appointment is both timely and symbolic. It reaffirms Atlanta’s unwavering commitment to equity and inclusion for all who call this city home.

“As a city dedicated to creating opportunities for all, we welcome Dewayne Queen to our team in a role that will continue our Administration’s work to create innovative programming and opportunities for the LGBTQ community,” said Mayor Dickens. “Dewayne is well-equipped to coordinate efforts among community partners, amplify intersectional voices and implement data-driven solutions that address the needs of marginalized groups, including LGBTQ youth, veterans, seniors and communities of color.”

Queen brings over a decade of experience driving impact in both the corporate and nonprofit sectors. At Delta Air Lines, he championed internal equity strategies and led the LGBTQ Business Resource Group (EQUAL), where he worked with senior leaders to create inclusive policies and deepen partnerships with national organizations like the Human Rights Campaign. His work was known not only for its heart, but for measurable outcomes that uplifted thousands of employees.

My intention is to lead with hope—hope that builds bridges, empowers voices, and ensures every LGBTQIA+ person feels seen, valued, and protected in the city we call home.

–Dewayne R. Queen

Beyond the corporate sector, Queen has volunteered in Atlanta-area high schools, leading discussions on embracing diversity and creating inclusive peer environments. He also serves on the boards of Atlanta Black Pride and Atlanta Pride, reinforcing his deep ties to community and local leadership.

“The work of equity, diversity and inclusion requires an intentional and focused leader to hear from, support and advance the agenda of Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ community. And I am excited to welcome Dewayne Queen as he sets a new vision for this work, which is foundational to the progress of human rights in our city and across the globe,” said Chief Equity Officer Candace M. Stanciel.

As Director of LGBTQ Affairs, Queen will serve as the primary liaison to the Mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Board and City departments, aligning efforts across City Hall to support LGBTQ residents. His focus areas will include affordable housing, economic mobility, and health equity—while continuing to move policies and programs that dismantle systemic barriers and celebrate Atlanta’s LGBTQ culture.

Queen’s effective date is Monday, June 30, 2025.
