Cleaner streets and safer neighborhoods are part of the job. But sometimes, city employees are called to serve in ways no one expects.

On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, members of the City of Atlanta Department of Public Works Right of Way Maintenance (ROWM) crew stepped in during a medical emergency in the parking lot of the Walmart on Cascade Road.

What began as a routine break quickly turned into a life-saving moment.

A Critical Moment in the Parking Lot

A team of four crew members noticed a black BMW X5 moving erratically and jumping curb stops. Concerned, they approached the vehicle and found a woman slumped over the steering wheel in visible distress.

Recognizing the urgency, the crew acted immediately.

Two team members opened the passenger door and discovered the driver’s oxygen machine had become disconnected. One crew member quickly reattached the oxygen line and adjusted the levels to help stabilize her breathing.

A third crew member dialed 9-1-1, provided the exact location, and followed the dispatcher’s instructions. A fourth team member alerted a nearby South Fulton Police officer to ensure additional support arrived quickly.

Their coordinated response ensured the woman received immediate assistance until emergency responders arrived.

She was transported to Grady Hospital. Her condition is not currently known.

Four Crew Members. One Mission.

In that moment, four City employees did what public service is all about — they stepped forward.

“Public service doesn’t stop when the trucks are parked,” said a Department of Public Works representative. “These team members showed compassion, awareness, and quick thinking that made a difference in a critical moment.”

Their swift action reflects the everyday dedication of city employees who serve residents across Atlanta’s neighborhoods.

Recognizing Unsung Heroes

The Department of Public Works, along with City leadership, will honor the crew members during a team breakfast on Thursday, December 11, at 7 a.m. at the Special Operations installation, 315 Chester Ave. SE.

While their daily responsibilities focus on maintaining Atlanta’s rights of way and keeping streets safe and functional, this moment showed how city workers contribute to public safety in unexpected ways.

The City of Atlanta commends the ROWM crew for their coordinated and compassionate response — delivering critical aid during a life-threatening situation.
