Atlanta paused this week to celebrate one of its most enduring leaders. Friends, family members, civic leaders, and community partners gathered along the BeltLine on March 25 to honor Andrew Young on his 94th birthday and recognize the lasting impact of his leadership on the city and the world.

Hosted by Atlanta BeltLine at The Retreat by The Gathering Spot, the celebration marked the fourth birthday tribute organized along different segments of the BeltLine corridor. The event brought together generations of leaders whose work continues to reflect Ambassador Young’s legacy of justice, diplomacy, and community building.

On behalf of Mayor Andre Dickens, Chief of Staff Courtney English delivered greetings recognizing Ambassador Young as a defining force in Atlanta’s progress and a model of moral courage and public service.

“Atlanta is better because of him,” English shared. “Not just in what we’ve built, but in who we’ve become.”

A legacy that shaped Atlanta and the nation

For more than six decades, Ambassador Young has helped shape the trajectory of Atlanta and the broader civil rights movement. He stood alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis during pivotal moments in American history, later serving as a U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Mayor of Atlanta. His leadership helped position Atlanta as a global city grounded in opportunity, diplomacy, and inclusion.

Speakers throughout the program reflected on the values he has modeled across generations: service rooted in faith, leadership grounded in community, and progress built through persistence.

The program included remarks from former Atlanta mayors Bill Campbell and Keisha Lance Bottoms, along with a blessing from Bernice A. King and reflections from members of the Young family. Civic leaders from across the region joined in honoring his continued influence on Atlanta’s growth and identity.

A celebration rooted in community

The evening highlighted not only Ambassador Young’s extraordinary accomplishments but also the relationships that continue to define his legacy. More than 200 guests gathered to recognize his role in shaping Atlanta’s spirit of collaboration and service.

The celebration concluded with a birthday tribute led by Atlanta artists Killer Mike, T.I., and Tyrese, followed by remarks from Ambassador Young and Carolyn Young.

Throughout the program, speakers reflected on how his leadership continues to guide Atlanta’s future, especially as the city works to expand opportunity across neighborhoods and ensure that progress reaches every resident.

As Chief of Staff English noted during the tribute, Atlanta’s vision of “one city with one bright future” builds on the foundation leaders like Ambassador Young helped create—one where opportunity is not limited by geography and where service remains at the center of civic life.
