For many Atlanta families, the rising cost of housing, transportation and everyday necessities makes it harder to save money, build financial stability and get ahead.
Now, the City of Atlanta is helping lead a new regional effort to address those challenges and create more opportunities for families.
On Wednesday, November 4, Mayor Andre Dickens joined approximately 1,500 regional leaders at the Atlanta Regional Commission’s annual State of the Region event, where a new initiative called Opportunity Rising was announced.
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) helps communities across metro Atlanta plan for growth and address shared challenges, including housing, transportation and economic development.
Opportunity Rising is a new partnership focused on helping more residents improve their financial futures, regardless of where they live or how much they earn.
Why This Matters Now
Metro Atlanta added approximately 54,000 residents over the past year, but growth has also brought challenges.
ARC’s latest Metro Atlanta Speaks survey found that housing affordability remains the region’s biggest concern for the second consecutive year. About half of respondents said housing costs make it difficult to get ahead financially.
Those concerns are helping shape Opportunity Rising, which will bring together local governments, nonprofits and community organizations to identify barriers to economic opportunity and coordinate solutions.
Atlanta’s Neighborhood Investments Are Part of the Solution
Mayor Dickens’ Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative (NRI) is a leading partner in Opportunity Rising, alongside ARC, United Way of Greater Atlanta and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.
Atlanta’s NRI focuses on strengthening neighborhoods that have experienced decades of underinvestment, with an emphasis on expanding opportunity and improving residents’ quality of life.
Through Opportunity Rising, Atlanta’s neighborhood-focused work will be part of a broader regional effort to address challenges that extend beyond city limits, including housing affordability, transportation access and economic mobility.
What’s Next?
Opportunity Rising will work with community partners and residents to identify needs, coordinate investments and measure progress.
ARC also plans to introduce a regional dashboard by mid-2027 to track how communities are progressing toward greater economic opportunity.
For Atlanta residents, the goal is straightforward: make it easier for families to afford where they live, connect to opportunities and build a stronger financial future.
By connecting Atlanta’s ongoing neighborhood investments with a larger regional partnership, the City is helping bring more attention and resources to challenges affecting families across metro Atlanta.
