Letting Memory Guide Us: Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) comes to City Hall

Across Mexico and Latin America, millions celebrate Día de Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” to honor loved ones who have passed from this world to the next.

The history of this holiday can be traced back to the Indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica, who believed death was an extension of life. In their cyclical view of life, they believed that death was a continuation of life in another realm. Día de Muertos is a day to help guide the souls of those who have passed through special meaningful offerings, and to ease their journeys from this life to the next.

Día de Muertos is traditionally celebrated with the building of altars or ofrendas, which are filled with photos of the departed, marigolds, and items symbolizing the four elements- water, wind, earth, and fire.

The City of Atlanta honored this meaningful observance with its very own ofrenda, created by Mexican and Latinx artists in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico and displayed at Atlanta City Hall for the duration of one week.

This altar featured traditional elements of a Mexican ofrenda, including pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead.”

Visitors to Atlanta City Hall were invited to personally interact with the altar by writing names of their passed loved ones on beautifully crafted monarch butterfly cut-outs, which were then be placed on the altar itself as a personal offering. The monarchs, or mariposas, symbolize the souls of the dead, and placing them on the altar symbolizes return, rebirth, and transformation.

Last week, a special reception was held to recognize the ofrenda. City officials, representatives of the Consulate General of Mexico, and participating artists welcomed guests and explained the significance of Día de Muertos.

Pan de mi Amor, a local bakery specializing in traditional Mexican sweet bread, sponsored the event with pan de muerto and cafe de olla.

Students from Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School’s HoPe Club (Hispanic Organization Promoting Education) attended the reception as well.

And the Consulate General of Mexico exhibited a display of photos that capture traditional celebrations of Día de Muertos across different regions and cities in Mexico.

Día de Muertos across the ATL

In addition to bringing the ofrenda to City Hall this year, the City of Atlanta welcomed a number of community celebrations of Día de Muertos.

Atlanta’s Historic Oakland Cemetery welcomed the Consulate General of Mexico and the Institute of Mexican Culture for their annual Día de Muertos celebration, which featured family-friendly activities such as folkloric dances, crafts, food, and traditional altars honoring lost family and friends.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) hosted its annual Día de Muertos Festival at The Woodruff Arts Center, featuring traditional dance performances from different regions of Mexico, Mexican-owned food vendors, artisans, bilingual storytelling, and face-painting.
