$250,000 Investment Will Help West Hollowell Communities Grow From Within

A new $250,000 City investment will help West Hollowell residents have a stronger community partner as new housing, development and other investments come to the area.

Atlanta City Council approved funding to continue building the West Hollowell Foundation, which will work with residents and partners in Brookwood Hills, formerly Bowen Homes, Almond Park and Carey Park.

The goal is straightforward: make sure residents are connected to the resources and opportunities coming into their neighborhoods — and have a voice in what happens next.

Silence the Shame's mission is to empower and educate communities on mental health and wellness.

What the Funding Will Do

The West Hollowell Foundation is being developed as a neighborhood organization that can bring residents, nonprofits, businesses and government partners together.

Its work will focus on the things families experience every day, including housing, education, health and wellness, and economic opportunity.

The funding can support staff, operations and programming as the organization grows. The Grove Park Foundation will serve as its fiscal agent and help build the organization’s capacity.

How This Fits Into NRI

The investment is part of the City’s Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative, or NRI.

NRI is the Dickens Administration’s effort to focus more attention and resources on Atlanta neighborhoods that have experienced years of underinvestment. Instead of looking at housing, infrastructure, economic opportunity and quality of life separately, the City is working with community partners to address them together.

For residents, that means the City’s investment in a neighborhood should be about more than new buildings. It should create opportunities for the people who already call that neighborhood home.

That is the role the West Hollowell Foundation is being built to help fill: listening to residents, connecting families with resources, bringing partners to the table and helping the community navigate the changes ahead.

With this latest investment, West Hollowell residents will have more local capacity working to make sure neighborhood growth benefits the people who live there.  Learn more about the Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative and work underway in Atlanta communities at ATLNeighborhoods.org.
