Why this matters

Winter break often means more free time for teens and fewer structured options at night. Teens After Dark is a new City-led approach to meeting that moment with opportunity, creativity, and community — giving teens somewhere positive to be after hours.

This winter break, the City of Atlanta is launching Teens After Dark, a new, free evening program designed to give teens a safe, engaging place to spend their nights while school is out.

Led by the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation, Teens After Dark will take place February 16–21, 2026, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the M.L. King Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center. The program combines recreation, creativity, and skill-building activities in a supervised environment designed specifically with teens in mind.

A proactive approach to teen safety and engagement

Teens After Dark was created as a proactive response to growing concerns about unsupervised teen gatherings during late-night hours, particularly when school is out and structured activities are limited.

Recent incidents involving teens congregating at popular destinations, including Atlantic Station, have reinforced the importance of prevention-focused solutions that emphasize engagement, connection, and positive alternatives.

Rather than reacting after issues arise, the City of Atlanta is investing in safe, welcoming spaces where teens can spend time, explore interests, and build community during evening hours. The program reflects coordination across City agencies, including collaboration with the Atlanta Police Department, to support youth safety through opportunity and presence.

What Teens After Dark offers

Throughout the week, teens can participate in a range of activities designed to reflect their interests while encouraging teamwork, creativity, and learning, including:

  • Basketball tournaments (1v1, 2v2, and 3v3) and shooting competitions
  • Gaming tournaments
  • Fashion design classes
  • Content creation and media-focused workshops
  • Cooking classes and hands-on experiences

All activities are supervised by trained Parks & Recreation staff in a structured, youth-centered setting.

Teens After Dark was created to give our youth a safe, welcoming space during winter break where they can connect, learn, and have fun. By offering activities that reflect their interests, we’re helping teens build skills and community while staying out of harm’s way, said Parks and Recreation Commissioner Justin Cutler.
