If youโve been through Downtown lately, you mightโve noticed things are looking a lot smoother around MLK and Forsythโand thatโs because the Ted Turner Bridge is officially back open.
Earlier this week, Mayor Andre Dickens joined Councilmember Jason Dozier, the Atlanta Department of Transportation, state leaders, and neighborhood partners for a ribbon-cutting celebrating the bridgeโs full reconstruction. After months of hard work, the stretch between Mitchell Street and Spring Street has been completely rebuilt, making it safer, wider, and more accessible for everyone.
โThis newly reconstructed viaduct and roadway is now safer, stronger, and better connected for everyone moving through our city,โ said Mayor Dickens at the event.
The upgrades included everything from a new retaining wall and wider bridge deck to a stronger approach slab and full rebuild of lower MLK Jr. Drive. The project not only helps ease traffic but reconnects neighborhoods like Castleberry Hill and Fairlie-Poplar to landmarks like Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the CNN Center.
And while officials were there to celebrate the big changes, so were small business owners like Mr. Shafi Jamil, whose family has run Subs and Salads Junction on that very corner for nearly 30 years. โThank you for hanging in there with us,โ the Mayor said.
This project is part of a broader effort to modernize Atlantaโs infrastructure and keep the city moving forwardโone viaduct, one neighborhood, and one connection at a time.
