Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Resilience Celebrates Earth Month with Initiatives to Address Atlantaโ€™s Climate Challenges

The Mayorโ€™s Office of Sustainability and Resilience (MOSR) is excited to announce a full month of events and activations to celebrate Earth Month this April. The MOSR office focuses on resilience, sustainability, and climate action and works to lead the charge in combating three primary climate challenges facing Atlanta – extreme heat, drought, and flooding.

Throughout April, the MOSR will host a series of educational and community-focused events, with four major initiatives:

    1. Race to Resilience Kickoffย (April 1) โ€“ City of Atlanta announces its official pledge to join the โ€œRace to Resilienceโ€, a UN-backed global campaign aiming to catalyze a shift in global ambition for climate resilience and build the resilience of 4 billion people to climate risks by 2030. Locally, this initiative will highlight Atlantaโ€™s efforts to boost tree canopy coverage, increase access to solar energy, address food waste and implement climate-resilient solutions identified in the forthcoming Climate Resilient ATL action plan.ย citiesracetoresilience.org
    2. Earth Day and Youth Climate Action Fund Global Announcementย (April 22) โ€“ Recognize the 55thย Anniversary of Earth Day by celebrating youth! In partnership with EarthDay.org, Bloomberg Philanthropies and 21st Century Leaders, the MOSR will announce the recipients of Round Two of theย Youth Climate Action Fund, which will distribute $85,000 in grants to local youth-led project teams. The Fund was created by Bloomberg Philanthropies to empower young leaders to take meaningful climate action and engage within their communities. Last year, 10 youth-led project teams were awarded $40,000 and made significant strides with their projects. This year, the Fund will support even more youth-driven projects and bring these leaders together for the Atlanta Youth Climate Action Summit at City Hall following an Atlanta City Council Proclamation in honor of Earth Day.
    3. Sustainability in Action Day at City Hallย (April 24) โ€“ The MOSR will host a day dedicated to sustainability initiatives at City Hall, focusing on local food systems and urban agriculture. The event will highlight the efforts of initiatives likeย AgLanta, which leases vacant city land to local growers, and other initiatives aimed at supporting local ecosystems. Community Partners will join this zero waste event with information tables, workshops, and locally-sourced food.
    4. Climate Resilient ATL Plan Kickoffย (April 30) โ€“ The MOSR will launch community-wide engagement for Atlantaโ€™s first comprehensive action plan for climate resilience, a blueprint designed to build our capacity for preparing, adapting, and responding to the impacts of climate change. This initiative is the culmination of 18 months of community input, research, and planning. The event will kick off a series of community festivals and engagements to further inform the cityโ€™s action plan for addressing climate-related challenges and its disproportionate impacts.

Join the MOSR and the City of Atlanta this April for a month of sustainability, resilience, and climate action.
