Atlanta Gets a First Look at MARTA’s Next-Generation Trains

Atlanta’s daily commute is about to feel very different—in a good way. Mayor Andre Dickens got a sneak peek this week at MARTA’s brand-new rail cars, offering an early look at the most technologically advanced trains in the country, set to roll out ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™.

These next-generation trains will replace MARTA’s 40-year-old fleet and are designed with riders in mind—from more open space and better visibility to modern tech that keeps customers connected and informed.

What’s new inside the trains

The four-car trains feature open gangways, meaning customers can see and walk from one end of the train to the other—creating a brighter, more open ride. Each train will also have a MARTA police officer assigned onboard to support safety.

Other rider-focused upgrades include:

Why the Mayor’s visit mattered

After the visit, the train underwent specialized testing to map system tags—technology that allows the train to accurately communicate its location across the rail network. This step is part of the rigorous testing every new train completes before entering regular service.

Mayor Dickens joined MARTA leadership, including Interim General Manager and CEO Jonathan Hunt and senior operations officials, to see firsthand how these upgrades will improve reliability, safety, and the overall rider experience.

What riders can expect—and when

Customers will begin seeing the new trains in service before the FIFA World Cup arrives in Atlanta this summer, marking a major milestone in modernizing the region’s transit system and preparing the city for millions of visitors from around the world.

As Atlanta readies itself for the global stage, these new trains signal what’s ahead: a smoother, smarter, and more comfortable ride for residents and visitors alike.
