A Conversation Focused on Housing and Neighborhood Investment

Chief of Staff Courtney English joined Axios yesterday for a live conversation with reporter Kristal Dixon about how Atlanta is working to expand affordable housing and strengthen neighborhoods. He described his role as helping carry out the Mayor’s goals and ensuring city government supports residents in their daily lives.

Progress Toward Atlanta’s Housing Goals

During the discussion, he shared that Atlanta has already created or is building 12,000 affordable homes. This puts the city ahead of schedule toward the 20,000-home goal set for 2030. He emphasized the importance of making sure new investment reaches communities on the south and west sides that have experienced fewer opportunities.

Neighborhood Reinvestment and Closing Long-Standing Gaps

Dixon asked about the Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative, which is expected to generate up to 1.5 billion dollars for housing and community improvements. English explained how tools like tax allocation districts help turn unused land into active, healthy neighborhoods, pointing to the transformation of Atlantic Station as an example of what these investments can achieve.

He also spoke about long-standing inequities between neighborhoods, including gaps in health, income, and educational outcomes. He said the administration is committed to building a city where every resident has the chance to succeed.

Supportive Housing and What Residents Can Expect Next

The conversation also covered homelessness, including the Mayor’s Rapid Housing Initiative. That effort has delivered or secured more than 500 units, including innovative modular projects with supportive services.

Looking forward, he said the City will continue to build new housing, partner closely with Atlanta Housing, redevelop vacant school properties, expand supportive housing, and create more opportunities for public workers such as teachers and first responders to live in the communities they serve.
