As forecasts indicate the potential for freezing rain and icy conditions, the City of Atlanta is closely monitoring an incoming winter weather event and preparing to respond.

Mayor Andre Dickens emphasized that City crews are ready and actively taking steps to protect residents and maintain essential services.

“We’re closely monitoring an incoming winter weather event, which could include freezing rain,” Mayor Dickens said. “City crews are ready. We’re pre-treating priority roads, monitoring water systems, preparing for downed trees, and ensuring that our 911 and emergency teams are fully staffed and positioned to respond.”

To support road treatment efforts, the City currently has 3,000 tons of salt and 23,000 gallons of brine on site. Usage will be based on the severity of weather conditions.

City departments across Atlanta are coordinating preparations, including transportation, public safety, utilities, and emergency management, to ensure continuity of services if conditions worsen.

Residents are encouraged to take steps now to prepare at home.

“Right now, you can help by preparing at home,” Mayor Dickens said. “Charge your devices, stock up on food, water, and batteries, bring your pets inside, and check on seniors and vulnerable neighbors.”

The Mayor also reminded residents to use emergency resources appropriately.

“Please only call 911 for true emergencies. ATL311 is available for non-emergency needs,” he said.

Warming centers are scheduled to open Saturday, January 24 at 8:00 p.m., with planned locations including Central Park Recreation Center, Old Adamsville Recreation Center (overflow), and Selena S. Butler Park, which serves women and children. Activation times may change based on weather conditions.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by following City of Atlanta channels, visiting atlantaga.gov, and signing up for NotifyATL emergency alerts by texting NOTIFYATL to 24639.

“Atlanta shows up best when we stay informed and take care of one another,” Mayor Dickens said. “Thank you, and please stay safe.”
