The spirit of light, community, and hope filled the Atlanta City Hall Atrium on Saturday, October 18, as Mayor Andre Dickens joined hundreds of residents to celebrate Diwali—the Festival of Lights—one of the most significant holidays observed by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and others around the world.

Hosted by local community leaders and attended by dignitaries including members of the Georgia General Assembly and the Consulate General of India, the event welcomed more than 250 guests for an evening of music, dance, prayer, and unity.

Lighting the Lamp of Unity
The evening opened with a vibrant cultural program followed by a ceremonial lamp lighting—symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Mayor Dickens joined India’s Consul General and faith leaders on stage to light the lamp before offering his greetings to the community.

“Atlanta has always prided itself on being a welcoming city,” Mayor Dickens said. “The values celebrated during Diwali—community, generosity, and hope—are universal. In Atlanta, we don’t just talk about unity, we live it every day.”

Honoring Community Leadership
During the program, Mayor Dickens was presented with the Hindu Ally Award in recognition of his continued support for Atlanta’s growing South Asian community. He also helped present awards to several community leaders whose work strengthens the cultural and civic fabric of the city.

Guest speakers included India Consul General Ramesh Babu, Senator Emanuel Jones, Representative Esther Panitch, and Representative Matt Reeves—all commending Atlanta’s role as a model of inclusion and interfaith collaboration.

Celebrating Diversity in the People’s House
Hosted in the City Hall Atrium—known as “the people’s house”—the Diwali celebration reflected Atlanta’s ongoing commitment to cultural inclusion and cross-community partnerships.

“Events like these remind us that our city’s strength comes from its diversity,” said Raymond Ross of the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services, who helped coordinate the event. “Diwali is not just a festival of lights—it’s a festival of togetherness.”

As Diwali officially begins today, October 20, the Mayor’s Office extends warm wishes to all who celebrate.

May this season of light bring peace, unity, and prosperity to everyone in Atlanta.
