Travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will soon notice a big change on Concourse D. Starting today, September 18, five brand-new gates will open, marking the completion of Phase 2 of the $1.3 billion Concourse D Widening Program. The expansion increases the width of the concourse to 99 feet, creating more room for passengers and future-ready space for airlines.

Mayor Andre Dickens joined airport leaders, construction partners, and airline representatives to cut the ribbon on this milestone. “This is the level of excellence travelers expect from Atlanta, and it is what we are delivering,” Dickens said.

Why It Matters

Concourse D is one of the busiest at ATL, serving millions of passengers every year. The wider design means more comfortable gate areas, upgraded restrooms, and improved circulation that reduces congestion and stress during travel. The new gates also meet the operational needs of today’s modern aircraft, including the Airbus A321-Neo and Boeing 737 Max-10.

For passengers, the improvements are clear: more seating, better amenities, and easier movement through one of the airport’s tightest spaces. For Atlanta, it’s another step toward keeping Hartsfield-Jackson the world’s busiest and most efficient airport.

By the Numbers

  • $1.3 billion investment to widen Concourse D
  • 5 new passenger gates now opening in Phase 2
  • 99 feet: the new concourse width for more space and comfort

These upgrades are part of ATLNext, the airport’s multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program that includes:

  • A $240 million Aviation Administration Center under construction
  • A $441 million South Parking Deck with nearly 8,000 spaces and EV charging
  • A $300 million Restroom Enhancement Program across the terminal

What’s Next

The Concourse D transformation is set to be completed by 2029, offering a fully modernized, spacious, and future-ready experience for travelers. Additional concession options are also planned, bringing more dining and shopping choices.

As Phase 2 opens to the public, Atlanta continues to prove it is built for the future—investing in infrastructure that drives growth, opportunity, and global connectivity.
