For more than two decades, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) has served as a cornerstone of Georgia’s Child Passenger Safety Program—an initiative launched by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to prevent injuries caused by improperly installed car seats. Thanks to a $210,211 federal grant, AFRD will continue expanding this vital program across metro Atlanta.
Under the leadership of Project Director William Hutchison, AFRD has trained fire departments, daycares, hospitals, and social workers statewide—hosting more than 600 safety events and distributing over 30,000 car seats to families in need. With 15 AFRD stations serving as certified fitting sites, parents and caregivers can access free car seat checks, learn proper installation techniques, and ensure compliance with Georgia law requiring children under eight to be properly restrained.
“Keeping our youngest residents safe is part of building #OneSafeCity—one seat at a time,” said Mayor Andre Dickens. “Programs like this demonstrate how our first responders protect and educate families every day.”
AFRD’s partnership with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety ensures that Atlanta continues leading the way in child passenger safety—empowering parents with tools and knowledge to prevent life-threatening injuries before they happen.
Families can visit fire.atlantaga.gov or stop by any AFRD certified fitting site to schedule a free car seat inspection.
