In 2016, MyCity ATL was established as a community engagement program by the Mayor’s Office of International and Immigrant Affairs (MOIIA) to inform new Americans about city services and resources, while empowering them to actively engage in building stronger, more connected communities.
Many new arrivals face challenges such as language barriers and unfamiliarity with city systems, which leaves them feeling isolated and underserved. MyCity ATL emerged as a response to these issues, equipping individuals with knowledge about city operations while fostering a sense of belonging and mutual understanding. The program covers a wide range of topics critical to newcomers, including driving and traffic regulations, emergency services, the U.S. job market, and the financial and banking system. Additionally, it strengthens community connections by offering information on social services, domestic violence resources, and emotional well-being.
MyCity ATL is a complementary program to the existing Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, which provides English language education to limited English speakers. Over time, the program has grown to include external partners, who help broaden the curriculum and enrich the experience of the adult students by sharing their expertise and resources.
A glimpse into a MyCity ATL session
The 2025 MyCity ATL cohort has been gathering since January 2025, united by a common goal: to learn English and build a new life in Atlanta. The room is filled with adult students from diverse nationalities.
Each student brings unique questions, as navigating a new country is never easy, whether they have arrived from Brazil, China, Colombia, Haiti, Mexico, Senegal, or Venezuela. As the discussion unfolds, the students share glimpses of their lives back in their countries. Among them are a master’s graduate, a printing solutions expert, a firefighter with 29 years of experience, and a small business entrepreneur who desires to continue sharing her delicious banana bread in her new home country.
Their stories reflect a common reality: moving to a new country often feels like starting over. They find themselves relearning the basics and navigating unfamiliar systems. Language barriers can overshadow even the most impressive backgrounds, leaving them feeling unseen and undervalued. Yet, as they are frequently reminded in the program, they possess a unique superpower: the ability to speak another language.
From Arrival to Belonging: The Impacts of MyCity ATL
Moving to a new country is a profound and transformative experience, often marked by a blend of hope, opportunity, and sacrifice. Behind every migrant or refugee story lies a journey with challenges– whether it’s fleeing conflict, leaving loved ones behind, or navigating the complexities of adapting into a new culture. The emotional toll of migration is significant, requiring immense courage and resilience to overcome obstacles such as loss of support systems, financial hardships, and the fear of discrimination. Despite these struggles, migrant and refugee communities are an example of strength and determination as they rebuild their lives.
Since 2016, MyCity ATL has welcomed participants from over 35 different nations, and in 2024 alone, the program supported 53 students from 18 countries.
Many immigrants and refugees come to Atlanta with advanced degrees and significant professional experience from their home countries. Yet, these credentials often go unrecognized due to complicated relicensing procedures or a lack of familiarity with U.S. systems. MyCity ATL has recognized this challenge and responded by offering resources to help participants reclaim their professional identities and integrate into Atlanta’s workforce. MOIIA has integrated two impactful initiatives: first, inviting the City’s Talent Acquisition team to conduct workshops on essential job-seeking skills, such as resume building and interview techniques.
The second initiative involves bringing back program alumni to engage with new students, offering guidance, advice, and mentorship. By sharing their personal journeys, alumni inspire new participants, helping them feel seen, understood, and empowered to pursue their own paths to success.

One day a friend told me about Atlanta Public Schools Adult ESOL where I could learn English. This was the beginning of my journey to finding not only knowledge but also community. I received advice on how to integrate into the community, and how to access opportunities that could transform my life. When you arrive in a new place with no family, no knowledge of the language, and no idea where to go for help, the world can seem overwhelming, but with the right guidance and care, Atlanta becomes a place of hope, opportunity, and belonging.
