On Wednesday, March 18, the City of Atlanta Department of Public Works hosted its All Labor Has Dignity Employee Appreciation Event at the C.T. Martin Natatorium and Recreation Center, bringing together over 200 employees for a day of recognition, reflection, and support.
The event honored the essential workers who serve every day to keep Atlanta clean, healthy, and moving forward. From maintaining public spaces to supporting the city’s daily operations, DPW team members play a vital role in safeguarding public health and enhancing the quality of life across Atlanta’s neighborhoods.
A Day to Pour Back Into Those Who Serve
City leadership said it was important to create space to honor employees who give so much in service to others.
In partnership with the City of Atlanta’s Department of Human Resources, frontline and support personnel received free health screenings, health-related materials, and fresh produce provided by City partners. The resources were part of a broader effort to support employee wellness and show appreciation in a meaningful, tangible way.
The day was meant not just as a celebration but also as a chance to give back to the workforce that helps keep the city safe, clean, and sanitary.
Honoring the Meaning of “All Labor Has Dignity”
The March 18 event date carried special significance.
This event marked the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1968 speech titled “All Labor Has Dignity,” delivered in Memphis, Tennessee, in support of striking sanitation workers. His message emphasized the importance of workers whose labor is essential yet often goes unrecognized. For DPW, the event served as a powerful tribute to that legacy — recognizing the dignity, sacrifice, and importance of public works employees whose service is foundational to city life.
Paying Tribute During International Women’s Month
The appreciation event also created space to recognize the women of DPW during International Women’s Month.
Their leadership, service, and contributions continue to shape the department and strengthen the work happening across the city each day. Acknowledging women within an often male-dominated workforce added another meaningful layer to a day already rooted in gratitude and respect.
Celebrating the Heart of Public Works
The All Labor Has Dignity Employee Appreciation Event was more than a gathering. It was a reminder that behind every collected cart, clean street, maintained right-of-way, and essential city service are employees whose work matters deeply.
By honoring its workforce on this historic day, DPW underscored a simple but powerful truth: every role has value, every employee deserves appreciation, and all labor has dignity.
