When Atlanta hosts a major event, dozens of City vehicles are in motion at once. Trucks deliver barricades, crews handle waste pickup, and maintenance teams stand ready for quick repairs. Behind the scenes, the City’s new Fleet Command Center makes sure everything runs without a hitch.
Launched in September 2024 by the Department of Public Works Office of Fleet Services (DPW OFS), the Command Center acts as a central nerve hub for Atlanta’s 5,000+ motorized vehicles and equipment. Using real-time data, GPS tracking, and diagnostics, staff can see where every vehicle is, how it’s performing, and whether it’s ready for the next assignment.
Smarter Tools, Smoother Service
Instead of waiting for breakdowns or fuel shortages to happen, the Command Center monitors each vehicle’s performance and fuel levels in real time. With integrated telematics—onboard sensors that track everything from engine health to driver safety—staff can:
- Predict and prevent costly repairs.
- Reroute vehicles to save time in heavy traffic.
- Spot irregular fuel use and correct it quickly.
These tools save money, reduce downtime, and keep City crews where residents need them most.
The Daily Impact
For residents, the results are simple: more reliable services. Trash trucks are less likely to miss a pickup. Maintenance vehicles are ready when a streetlight needs repair. And during severe weather, the City can dispatch resources faster by knowing exactly which vehicles are ready to go.
“Effective fleet management is essential for improving waste management, maintenance systems, and transportation operations,” said Kendra Baity, DPW Business Manager II. “By overseeing key areas such as vehicle maintenance, fuel management, telematics, and driver safety, we minimize costs, improve safety, and reduce the risk of service interruptions.”
Ready for Big Moments
The Command Center also shines during large-scale events. From football championships to festivals, it coordinates routes, tracks traffic conditions, and ensures every vehicle is fueled, serviced, and camera-ready. By acting as a central communication hub, it keeps departments connected so the City can deliver seamless services while residents enjoy the event.
Building a Smart City
The Fleet Command Center is more than a back-office upgrade—it’s a step toward Atlanta’s future as a Smart City. By using technology to cut costs, increase efficiency, and promote sustainability, DPW OFS is ensuring that Atlanta stays prepared for whatever comes next.
